Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has raised alarm over the increasing number of deaths linked to cardiovascular diseases in Nigeria, describing the trend as a silent public health crisis that requires urgent national attention.

Speaking at a health summit in Awka, Soludo said hypertension, stroke and heart related conditions are claiming more lives than many infectious diseases, largely due to lifestyle changes, poor diet and limited access to preventive healthcare. He warned that without a coordinated response, Nigeria risks facing an even greater burden on its already stretched health system.

The governor called for stronger public awareness campaigns focused on early screening, regular exercise and healthier food choices. He also urged private sector players to partner with government in expanding diagnostic centres and training healthcare workers in cardiology and emergency care.

Health experts at the event echoed Soludo’s concerns, noting that many Nigerians only seek medical help when symptoms become severe. They stressed the need for community based interventions and affordable health insurance schemes to make preventive care accessible to low income earners.
