Makoko Residents Lament Losses Displacement After Demolition Residents of Makoko waterfront community in Lagos have raised fresh concerns over widespread displacement and economic losses following the demolition of several waterfront structures by government authorities.
Affected families say the exercise, carried out in the early hours, left many without shelter and destroyed small businesses that provided daily income. Fishermen and petty traders told reporters that they were not given adequate notice or alternative resettlement plans, deepening fears of a humanitarian crisis in the area.
Lagos State officials have defended the action, explaining that the structures were illegal and posed serious environmental and security risks. The government said the operation was part of a broader urban regeneration plan aimed at restoring order and safety along coastal corridors.
Human rights groups, however, have called for a more humane approach, urging the state to balance urban planning objectives with social protection. They warn that repeated forced evictions without rehabilitation programmes could worsen urban poverty and social tension.
