The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed calls for his removal from office, insisting that only President Bola Tinubu has the authority to sack him.
Wike made the declaration on Sunday during a thank you visit to Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he addressed party leaders, traditional rulers, women and youths. He described political power as a product of strength and strategy rather than sentiment, warning that Obio Akpor remains a decisive force in the state’s political landscape.
According to the former Rivers State governor, politics is driven by interests and the ability to mobilise electoral strength. He argued that Obio Akpor’s voting capacity gives it influence over who emerges as governor or senator in Rivers East, stressing that the local government has historically played a decisive role in major political outcomes.
Wike cautioned critics who, according to him, attack from the sidelines without electoral weight, saying political relevance is measured by votes, not online commentary. He added that his continued stay in office depends solely on the confidence of President Tinubu, not public agitation.
“If my appointor feels I no longer have value to offer, he has the right to act. No other person can decide that,” he said, expressing confidence that his performance in the FCT has met public expectations.
Earlier, the Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Council, Gift Worlu, praised Wike’s political influence and reaffirmed the council’s loyalty, pledging continued support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Also speaking, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, assured Wike of legislative backing, urging him to ignore detractors.
The visit comes amid renewed political tension in Rivers State following impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct, marking another escalation in the prolonged political crisis in the state.
