The All Progressives Congress States Assembly Forum (ASAF) has endorsed the declaration by the party’s National Working Committee recognising Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as the leader of the APC in the state following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party.

ASAF, which comprises all serving and elected APC lawmakers nationwide, said the position of the NWC aligns with the party’s constitution and leadership structure.

Governor Fubara’s defection has sparked controversy, particularly with his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who accused the governor of breaching an agreement allegedly reached before President Bola Tinubu ahead of the lifting of the earlier six-month emergency rule in Rivers State.

The disagreement intensified after the APC NWC insisted that Fubara, like other sitting governors, is the leader of the party in his state, stressing that Wike is not a member of the APC and therefore has no authority to interfere in its internal affairs.

In a statement issued from Kaduna on Wednesday and signed by its Director-General, Ambassador Fubara Dagogo, ASAF passed a vote of confidence in the APC NWC led by Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, describing its position as clear and constitutionally grounded.

“Our great party is well structured with a clear constitution defining its leadership hierarchy. There is no basis for disputing the leadership of the APC in Rivers State,” the statement said.

The forum urged Governor Fubara and the party leadership to remain focused and ignore what it described as attempts by non-members to sow division within the APC. It also cautioned against infiltration by opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that the APC remains united and resilient.
