Bandits Attack Two Local Government Areas In Niger Kill Over Thirty Abduct Many
At least thirty people have been confirmed killed following coordinated attacks by bandits on two local government areas in Niger State. The attacks which occurred in separate communities left scores injured and many residents abducted, deepening security concerns in the region.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, firing sporadically and setting houses ablaze. The assault reportedly lasted several hours, overwhelming local vigilantes and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes.
Local authorities confirmed that the affected communities suffered significant casualties, with women and children among those abducted. Survivors described scenes of panic as families were separated during the attacks.
Security agencies have deployed additional personnel to the area in response to the violence. According to officials, search and rescue operations are underway while efforts are being made to track the attackers’ escape routes.
The Niger State Government condemned the attacks and assured residents that security operations would be intensified. The governor described the incident as unacceptable and called for stronger collaboration between federal forces and local security groups.
Community leaders lamented the recurring nature of such attacks, urging the government to address the root causes including porous borders and the proliferation of illegal weapons. Humanitarian groups have also called for urgent assistance for displaced residents.
The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in rural areas, where banditry has continued to disrupt livelihoods and threaten lives.
