The Chief of Naval Staff has revealed that the Nigerian Navy successfully dredged approximately eleven kilometres of waterways within the Lake Chad region despite the persistent presence of terrorist groups operating in the area. The disclosure highlights the Navy’s expanding role in both security operations and national infrastructure support in conflict affected zones.

According to the naval chief the dredging project was a strategic intervention aimed at improving navigability for patrol boats logistics vessels and humanitarian operations. He explained that the shallow and obstructed waterways previously limited operational effectiveness and hindered both military and civilian activities.

The operation was carried out under intense security pressure as terrorist groups remain active around the Lake Chad basin. Naval personnel reportedly worked under constant threat of ambush but maintained discipline and focus throughout the mission.

The Chief of Naval Staff noted that improved waterways have strengthened the Navy’s capacity to conduct surveillance intercept arms smuggling and disrupt insurgent supply routes. The dredged channels now allow for faster response times and sustained patrols across previously inaccessible areas.

Beyond military objectives the project also holds economic and humanitarian significance. Local fishing communities have benefited from safer and deeper waterways which support livelihoods and food supply. Aid agencies have also found it easier to reach displaced populations requiring assistance.

The naval leadership emphasised that securing inland waterways is a critical part of Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy. Terrorist groups often exploit riverine routes for movement and logistics making control of waterways essential for long term stability.

The Navy reiterated its commitment to joint operations with the Army Air Force and regional partners within the Lake Chad Basin Commission framework. These collaborations aim to degrade terrorist networks while restoring normalcy to affected communities.

As Nigeria continues to battle insecurity the Navy assured citizens that it remains resolute in protecting territorial waters inland waterways and national economic assets even in the most challenging environments.
