The National Assembly has moved to calm rising public anxiety over alleged discrepancies in the recently gazetted tax reform acts signed into law by President Bola Tinubu. The clarification comes amid growing debates across political legal and business circles following claims that certain provisions in the gazetted versions differ from what lawmakers originally passed.
Addressing the controversy senior legislators explained that the tax laws followed due legislative process from drafting to passage and final gazetting. According to the Assembly the documents currently in circulation accurately reflect the harmonised versions approved by both chambers after extensive deliberations committee reviews and public consultations.
Lawmakers stressed that no new clauses were inserted after presidential assent and that allegations of hidden or controversial provisions stem largely from misinterpretation of legal terminology rather than deliberate manipulation. They explained that tax legislation often contains complex language that may appear unfamiliar to the general public but remains consistent with global legislative standards.
The Assembly recalled that the tax reform bills underwent months of scrutiny including stakeholder engagements with professional bodies labour unions civil society organisations and private sector representatives. These sessions were aimed at balancing revenue generation with economic fairness while protecting vulnerable citizens and businesses.
According to the lawmakers the reforms are designed to modernise the tax system expand the tax base reduce leakages and improve fiscal sustainability. They added that Nigeria’s heavy dependence on borrowing and oil revenues made comprehensive tax reform unavoidable.
Members of the National Assembly further assured Nigerians that oversight mechanisms are in place to monitor the implementation of the laws and address any unintended consequences. Relevant committees were directed to remain open to feedback from the public and propose amendments where necessary through lawful procedures.
The Assembly also urged Nigerians to avoid misinformation and rely on official legislative documents rather than social media speculation. Lawmakers encouraged professional groups legal practitioners and economic analysts to engage constructively with the reforms by offering technical insights instead of fueling public distrust.
As debates continue the National Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to transparency accountability and democratic governance. It insisted that the tax acts were enacted in good faith and in the long term interest of national development economic stability and improved public service delivery.
