LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 14 suspected traffic robbers operating along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, following a surge in incidents involving the theft of vehicle parts during heavy traffic.
The arrests were carried out over the past two weeks by the Tactical Squad attached to Elemoro Division at several strategic points along the busy corridor. The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi.
Crackdown on Traffic-Related Vandalism
The operation was launched in response to growing public complaints from motorists whose vehicles were being attacked during gridlock.
“Fourteen suspected traffic robbers have been intercepted at different locations along the corridor within the last two weeks,” CSP Adebisi said. “This operation demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding road users. We urge residents to remain vigilant — if you see something, say something.”
High-End SUVs Targeted
Recent online reports, including a widely shared account by tech influencer Fisayo Fosudo highlighted repeated attacks on motorists, with thieves allegedly dismantling parts from vehicles while owners were trapped in traffic.
Patterns reported by victims include:
-
Luxury SUVs — especially Lexus RX 350 (2017–2022 models) — are prime targets
-
Side mirrors and black backing covers are frequently stolen
-
Single mirror replacements reportedly cost above ₦100,000
-
Suspects often disguise themselves as beggars or hawkers
Continued Police Operations
The Command said investigations are ongoing to identify additional members of the syndicates. Tactical patrols and covert “sting operations” will be intensified along the expressway to deter further incidents. Motorists were advised to remain alert and report suspicious activity immediately.
