Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has received a timely lift ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with young midfielder Ebenezer Akinsanmiro making an impressive return to action for Pisa on Monday, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 21-year-old had been out for a month after picking up a shoulder injury during Pisa’s Serie B clash with Cremonese on 7 November. Although he was initially expected back sooner, Soccernet.ng reported on Friday that he still needed a late fitness test to determine his availability for the match against Parma.
Akinsanmiro eventually made the matchday squad and was brought on at halftime. His introduction immediately changed the flow of the game. While possession was balanced in the first half, Pisa went on to dominate with 70 per cent of the ball after his arrival.
The Nigerian midfielder delivered four key passes, completed 96 per cent of his 28 attempted passes, and added two successful dribbles and one tackle. Despite his strong showing, Pisa fell to a 1–0 defeat. Nevertheless, Akinsanmiro was named the highest-rated player on the pitch with a Sofascore rating of 8.1.
Why Akinsanmiro’s return is vital for Eric Chelle
Akinsanmiro’s comeback represents a significant advantage for Nigeria ahead of AFCON 2025. The midfielder is in excellent form, and with Chelle lacking many established options in the centre of the pitch, he appears to be a strong contender for a place in the final squad.
He is also familiar with African football, having played in the Nigerian Professional Football League before moving to Europe. This reduces any concerns about adapting to the physical and tactical demands of continental competition.
Akinsanmiro has already been named in the Super Eagles’ 55-man provisional list, and reports indicate that he is likely to make the final cut.
Given his current performances and previous experience on the continent, his presence would be a welcome addition to Chelle’s squad as Nigeria aim for a strong showing at AFCON 2025.
