Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has condemned the distribution of luxury vehicles by public office holders ahead of the 2027 campaign, describing it as “profoundly insensitive” and an abuse of public trust.
Obi made the comments in a post on his verified X handle titled, “Distribution of Campaign Vehicles: Profound Insensitivity and Abuse of Trust,” on Wednesday.
He said that at a time when Nigerians are struggling with hunger, unemployment, and insecurity, allocating public resources to provide Hilux trucks, Land Cruisers, and Hummer buses for political mobilisation reflects a serious moral failure.
“While ordinary Nigerians grapple with poverty and hopelessness, those in leadership positions continue to flaunt their wealth, treating the suffering of the people as mere background for political theatrics. This tragic misplacement of priorities is unacceptable,” Obi wrote.
He urged leaders to focus on providing food for the hungry, access to healthcare for the sick, restoring hope for unemployed youth, and securing communities rather than staging political publicity through luxury vehicles.
Obi further highlighted the human cost of misgovernance, noting that children are dropping out of school due to tuition challenges, mothers are dying in childbirth due to lack of medical supplies, and insecurity is tearing families apart.
“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy. Our citizens deserve leadership grounded in empathy, prudence, and accountability,” he added.
Obi concluded with optimism, stating, “Regardless of how bleak the situation may appear today, a new Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible.”
