Several major European clubs are competing to sign highly rated Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu, whose impressive rise in Austria has caught widespread attention, according to Soccernet.ng.

French outlet Top Mercato reports that Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Leeds United are among the clubs keen on the former Enyimba standout.

The 22-year-old has earned significant admiration following a series of commanding performances for Wolfsberger AC, where he has quickly established himself as one of the Austrian Bundesliga’s most influential young defenders.

PSG and Marseille are said to be leading the interest from France, while LOSC Lille, Lens and Strasbourg are also monitoring the situation.
In Germany, Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly made concrete enquiries.

Leeds United are keeping close watch as they assess defensive reinforcements ahead of the second half of their Premier League campaign.

Nwaiwu’s versatility—he can operate both as a centre-back and as a holding midfielder—has only boosted his appeal among scouts across Europe.

Chibuike Nwaiwu: From Nigeria’s Leagues to Europe’s Radar

Nwaiwu began his football development in Nigeria with Borussia Digitals Sporting Academy before turning out for Enyimba International and Heartland FC.

He joined Wolfsberger AC in January 2024 and settled in immediately, helping the club lift the Austrian Cup. He has since made nearly 50 appearances, scoring five goals and providing an assist, while standing out as a physically dominant and consistent performer.

At 1.93 metres, Nwaiwu is regarded as one of the most complete defenders in Austria—strong in duels, composed on the ball and with excellent reading of the game.
Transfermarkt values him at €7 million, although Wolfsberger are expected to set a much higher asking price given the calibre of clubs involved.

Leeds’ interest is considered ambitious, particularly as the club originally focused on attacking additions. However, the need for a reliable young centre-back has become a priority as they plan for survival and long-term squad building.

At PSG, Luis Enrique still has experienced options, but concerns are emerging. Marquinhos is now over 30, while Lucas Beraldo continues to attract attention from elsewhere, prompting long-term planning in defence. Nwaiwu fits that profile perfectly.

With interest coming from France, Germany and England, the upcoming winter transfer window is shaping up to be a decisive moment in Nwaiwu’s career. His rapid progression—from Nigeria’s domestic league to the centre of a major European chase—marks him out as one of the continent’s most closely watched young defenders.
