The Super Eagles have received a timely boost ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after Blackburn Rovers full-back Ryan Alebiosu was cleared to represent Nigeria at the tournament in Morocco.

Nigeria’s defensive options have appeared increasingly stretched in recent weeks, particularly at right-back, where injuries and uncertainty threatened to derail preparations for a tournament in which the former champions are expected to contend for a fourth AFCON title.

Concerns intensified following unverified reports suggesting that long-serving captain William Troost-Ekong may be considering international retirement. While no official confirmation has been issued, the speculation has added to the unease surrounding the heart of the defence.

Aina Ruled Out, Fredrick Injured

The most significant setback, however, has been the unavailability of Ola Aina. The Nottingham Forest defender, Nigeria’s first-choice right-back, underwent surgery after sustaining an injury on international duty and is not expected to return to competitive action until early 2026. His absence automatically ruled him out of the AFCON, which begins on 21 December.

Bright Osayi-Samuel remained the primary option, though head coach Eric Chelle appeared unconvinced, experimenting with Brentford teenager Benjamin Fredrick — a natural centre-back — in the position during recent matches. Fredrick’s own injury, sustained on loan at Belgian side Dender FC, further depleted Nigeria’s defensive cover.

Alebiosu Emerges as the Ideal Solution

Alebiosu’s clearance now offers much-needed reinforcement. According to local reports, the 23-year-old has been approved to play for Nigeria at the AFCON, providing Chelle with a modern, athletic full-back known for his defensive discipline and attacking energy.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Alebiosu spent 13 years at Arsenal’s academy and signed a professional deal with the club in 2020. He gained senior experience across spells at Crewe Alexandra, Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Belgian side Kortrijk before joining Blackburn Rovers permanently this summer.

His development has accelerated in the Championship, where he has made 18 impressive appearances, including scoring his first goal for Rovers — an equaliser in a 2–1 comeback victory over Southampton on 25 October. His blend of strength, aerial presence, smart positioning and adventurous forward play aligns closely with the full-back profile Nigeria have been seeking.

AFCON Squad Announcement Imminent

Alebiosu is expected to be named in Chelle’s 28-man squad, which is set to be announced in the coming hours. Nigeria have been drawn in Group D alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania — a competitive group in which defensive stability and tactical versatility will be crucial.

The Super Eagles will hope Alebiosu’s inclusion helps steady a back line hit by injuries at a critical moment in their AFCON preparations.
