The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that the bodies of two women earlier reported missing have been recovered from the Omambala River in Anambra West Local Government Area of the state.
The women were identified as Cameroonian nationals who were part of a group of three persons declared missing under suspicious circumstances. Their remains were discovered during a coordinated search operation carried out on Friday, November 28, 2025.
Spokesperson of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad based in Awkuzu conducted the operation with support from professional divers and members of the local community.
He said the recovered bodies were later identified by family members as Mrs Bognou Alice and her niece, Miss Sandra. According to him, the bodies have been deposited at a mortuary for preservation and forensic analysis as investigations continue.
The Police Command further revealed that two suspects are currently in custody in connection with the case. They were identified as Nonso Augustine Akpeh, aged 37, and Kingsley Akpeh, aged 44. A third person of interest, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, has been declared wanted and efforts are ongoing to track him down.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that the police would ensure that all those involved in the incident are brought to justice. He also ordered all operational units to intensify efforts to locate the third missing person.
The Police Command assured residents that investigations are being handled with utmost seriousness.
