A teenager identified simply as DMX has been shot dead by an unidentified police officer in the Alakia area of Ibadan, Oyo State, following an alleged altercation between the two.
The incident occurred on Tuesday and has since generated public outrage. A source familiar with the matter disclosed on Wednesday that the disagreement escalated, prompting the officer to shoot the teenager in the leg. The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital by his friends but later died from the gunshot injury after losing a large amount of blood.
According to the source, the teenager suffered excessive bleeding before receiving medical attention. The case gained widespread attention after a social media user raised alarm on X, claiming the victim did not physically attack the policeman before he was shot. The user alleged that the officer acted recklessly and tagged an anti cultism advocacy group, Naija Confra.
Naija Confra later corroborated the account, stating that although the victim was taken to the hospital alive and payment was made for blood transfusion, delays in medical intervention contributed to his death. The group also claimed that the deceased father is a senior police officer.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Oyo State Police Command proved unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Oyefeso, did not respond to calls and a text message sent as at the time of filing this report.
The incident has intensified public concerns over rising cases of alleged excessive force by security operatives across the country.
