Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has disclosed that he was deeply provoked by remarks made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his 65th birthday celebration in Lagos — so much so that he briefly considered physically confronting him.

In a recent interview, Fayose said Obasanjo’s speech at the event reignited longstanding tensions between the two men. Despite attempts to mend fences ahead of the party, he claimed Obasanjo’s comments were laced with personal attacks. According to Fayose, the former president described him as “not the best” of his protégés — a remark he interpreted as a deliberate slight.

Speaking about the moment his anger peaked, Fayose said:

“I was enraged. I felt like taking the mic from Obasanjo’s hand and hitting it on his head.”

He said he restrained himself out of respect — particularly due to the presence of the Vice President at the event.  Fayose argued that his earlier outreach to Obasanjo was made in good faith, but regretted it turned sour.

Fayose concluded by questioning the purpose of reconciliation if it only served to invite humiliation: “If I knew this was how it would end, what do I need Obasanjo for?”
