Popular fuji musician, Abass Akande, widely known as Obesere, was on Friday attacked by suspected thugs during a burial ceremony in Okitipupa, Ondo State. The incident occurred at the Government Field, where the artist had been invited to perform alongside his band.
Eyewitnesses reported that chaos erupted shortly after Obesere mounted the stage. A group of hoodlums allegedly stormed the venue, disrupting the event and attacking members of his band. Guests were said to have fled in panic as the attackers smashed musical equipment valued in millions of naira. One of the band members was reportedly stabbed while attempting to shield the team from the assault.
Local sources say the invasion was sudden, leaving organisers overwhelmed and unable to contain the situation. Videos circulating online show scattered chairs, damaged instruments, and guests running for safety.
The Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin, confirmed the attack and condemned the violence, describing it as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He assured the public that investigations have commenced to uncover the identities of those behind the disruption and to prevent such incidents in the future. Ogunsakin also disclosed plans to reach out to Obesere and his management team to express the council’s regrets.
As of the time of reporting, Obesere has not issued an official statement on the incident. However, fans across social media have expressed concern and called for improved security measures at public events to protect entertainers and attendees. Authorities in the area have promised to intensify efforts to maintain peace and order at social gatherings.
