Several people are feared dead following a gas explosion in Bioku-Alaadun, a bustling area of Ibadan, Oyo State. The blast reportedly occurred while a tanker was discharging gas into a retail outlet, sending shockwaves through the neighborhood and igniting panic among residents.
Although early reports suggested multiple casualties, the Oyo State Fire Service confirmed three fatalities. Among the victims was the owner of the gas shop, while two others were reportedly nearby when the explosion occurred. Several people also sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
General Manager of the Fire Service, Mr. Akinyinka Akinyemi, who was among the first responders, said his team acted swiftly to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with thick smoke and flames consuming nearby shops and structures before emergency personnel could bring the situation under control.
Security operatives and fire service officials cordoned off the area to manage the aftermath, while locals remained in shock at the sudden devastation.
The Oyo State Government has urged residents to stay calm and assured that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Authorities also warned gas retailers and transporters to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Rescue and recovery efforts continue as families await news of missing persons, while the community grapples with the aftermath of the catastrophic explosion.
