In a controversial move to curb rising insecurity, 20 of the 34 local government areas (LGAs) in Katsina State have reportedly signed a truce with armed bandit groups.
The agreement came during a closed-door meeting involving council chairmen and traditional rulers, where bandit representatives fired gunshots into the air before leaving. The accord reportedly includes the release of detained bandit members in exchange for freed civilians currently held captive. Local authorities are coordinating with security agencies to formalize any such arrangements.
Despite the truce, residents remain skeptical, reporting that attacks in some communities have continued, raising questions about the agreement’s effectiveness. Human rights groups have also criticized the move, warning that negotiating with bandits could encourage criminality rather than resolve it.
Authorities, however, insist the truce is a step toward restoring peace and stability, while urging communities to cooperate with security forces.
