The Niger State Government has attributed the recent mass abduction of students and teachers at St. Mary’s School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area to the school’s decision to resume operations against government directives.
The government stated that it had earlier issued a security advisory warning schools in the area to remain closed following credible intelligence of threats from armed groups. St. Mary’s School, however, reopened without informing state authorities, a move the government described as “avoidable” and one that put students and staff at serious risk.
Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, urged all school authorities to strictly adhere to official security advisories to prevent further tragedies. Meanwhile, security forces have launched search-and-rescue operations to secure the abducted students and teachers.
The government also appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities by providing credible information to aid the rescue efforts.
