Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that political leadership demands integrity, responsibility, and maturity, asserting that the arena is not suited for individuals of questionable character.
Speaking during a recent forum on national governance, Jonathan stressed that the challenges facing Nigeria require leaders who are principled, transparent, and committed to the public good, rather than those seeking personal gain or engaging in divisive practices.
“Politics is not for rascals. Leadership is about service, accountability, and putting the nation above personal interest,” he said.
Jonathan urged both seasoned politicians and young aspirants to prioritize competence and ethical conduct in their political engagements, emphasizing that the future of Nigeria depends on leaders who uphold democratic values and respect the rule of law.
He further called on citizens to exercise vigilance in choosing their leaders, noting that active participation in governance is critical to sustaining democracy and national development.
The former president’s comments come amid heightened political debates over party primaries, governance quality, and the conduct of public officials across the country.
