The National Judicial Institute (NJI) has dismissed widespread social media reports alleging that Nigerian judges sang the political refrain “On Your Mandate We Shall Stand” during the 2025 All Nigeria Judges Conference.
In a statement issued by its Head of Information, Kolade Umoru, the NJI described the viral claim as false, misleading, and completely at variance with the events of the conference’s opening ceremony. The Institute clarified that the only song rendered collectively by participants was the National Anthem, which was sung at both the beginning and end of the event.
Umoru explained that while the tune “On Your Mandate” was heard, it was not initiated by the judiciary. Rather, the ceremonial song was played briefly by the Guards Brigade Band as part of their standard protocol while receiving President Bola Tinubu, who attended the conference as a special guest. He stressed that judges did not participate in the singing.
The NJI reaffirmed the judiciary’s strict non-partisanship, emphasizing that judges remain committed to constitutional responsibilities and do not engage in political displays or endorsements. The Institute warned that the circulation of such misinformation could undermine public trust in the judiciary.
The NJI urged the public and media to exercise caution by verifying information before sharing, especially on sensitive matters concerning national institutions.
