Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been ruled out of Nigeria’s crucial match against DR Congo on Sunday, according to Soccernet.ng.
Ndidi delivered one of his finest performances in a Nigerian shirt during the 4–1 demolition of Gabon in the semifinals of the CAF World Cup playoffs. The Leicester City star controlled the midfield brilliantly and supplied the superb assist for Chidera Ejuke’s goal, which swung the momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favour during extra time. His display earned him a 7.5 rating from Soccernet.ng — his highest in a long while.
Despite the impressive outing, one moment has cost him dearly. Ndidi received a yellow card in the 6th minute for a tactical foul, a necessary intervention that prevented a dangerous Gabon attack. Unfortunately, that booking is now the reason he will miss Sunday’s encounter.
Why Is Wilfred Ndidi Ineligible?
Under the World Cup Qualifier regulations, a player who accumulates two yellow cards is automatically suspended for one match. Ndidi had already been cautioned earlier in the campaign — in the game against Rwanda in March — meaning the yellow he picked up against Gabon triggered an automatic ban.
If Nigeria fields him against DR Congo, the Super Eagles would face a heavy penalty: the match would be forfeited in favour of the Leopards, and the NFF would also be fined. This is a similar situation to what recently happened with South Africa.
Osimhen’s Situation: A Warning Sign
Victor Osimhen ended his goal drought by scoring twice in extra time against Gabon. However, after netting his second goal, he removed his shirt in celebration, which earned him a yellow card from referee Tom Abongile.
The Napoli striker is still eligible to feature against DR Congo, but Nigeria must proceed with caution. Should Osimhen receive another booking on Sunday, he will be suspended for the Intercontinental playoff final next year — if the Super Eagles qualify.
