Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reaffirmed the team’s strong determination to book a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria will take on Gabon in a crucial play-off semi-final clash in Rabat on Thursday. Preparations were briefly disrupted earlier in the week by reports of a players’ protest over unpaid allowances and bonuses, but those issues have since been resolved, allowing full attention to return to the pitch.
“It’s something we always talk about — playing at the World Cup is every footballer’s dream,” Troost-Ekong shared in a post highlighted by Victor Ademola. “I’ve spoken to the boys about my own experience, and the hunger for another shot at the world stage is stronger than ever.”
The skipper emphasized that the players are fully aware of what’s at stake. “Everyone understands the importance of these matches. The younger ones are eager to make their mark, and we all want to achieve something great for Nigeria. There’s a real sense of urgency and total focus within the team.”
Nigeria sealed their play-off ticket with a commanding 4–0 victory over Benin Republic in October. Despite recent distractions, Troost-Ekong insists the squad’s commitment to securing a spot at next year’s World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico remains unwavering.
A win against Gabon would see the Super Eagles advance to the final round, where they would face the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo.
