The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of 416 women, children, and elderly persons abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State since March 30, 2026.
The resolution followed renewed attacks on military formations and fresh threats by the insurgents against any forceful rescue operation. The motion, titled “Urgent Need To Curb Attacks On Military Formations By Boko Haram Insurgents,” was sponsored by Senator Tahir Monguno and co-sponsored by Senators Ali Ndume and Kaka Lawan.
Leading the debate, Monguno expressed concern over coordinated attacks on military bases in Monguno and Benisheikh, warning that the resurgence of insurgent activities threatens national security and undermines gains made in counter-insurgency operations.
Ndume, in his contribution, raised alarm over the fate of the abducted victims, revealing that insurgents had issued threats to disperse them if urgent action is not taken. He urged swift intervention by both the National Assembly and the Presidency.
Also speaking, Senator Diket Plang warned that continued attacks on military personnel were instilling fear among citizens, noting that the killing of security officers sends a dangerous signal nationwide.
Senator Abdul Ningi called for more decisive measures, including the possible suspension of political activities in frontline states until security improves significantly.
In its resolutions, the Senate strongly condemned ongoing attacks on military formations and observed a minute of silence in honour of fallen soldiers. Lawmakers also urged the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs to conduct a comprehensive operational and logistical audit to address gaps in equipment and strategy.
The Senate further called on the Armed Forces to adhere strictly to rules of engagement and international humanitarian law, while investigating allegations of civilian harm during operations. Communities were encouraged to provide credible intelligence to security agencies.
Lawmakers commended troops of Operation Hadin Kai for their bravery and urged the government to prioritise their welfare.
The development follows the release of a video by a Boko Haram faction showing abducted victims in Ngoshe, Gwoza Local Government Area, with threats issued against any rescue attempt.
