The Governor of Sokoto State, Honourable Ahmed Aliyu, has declared that the state government, in collaboration with federal security agencies, is achieving significant milestones in the ongoing effort to eradicate banditry and restore peace to troubled communities. Speaking during a State Executive Council (SEC) meeting at the Government House in Sokoto on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Governor noted that the “renewed offensive” against criminal elements has led to the “degradation of several bandit camps” across 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) that were previously identified as high-risk zones. Governor Aliyu emphasized that the primary goal of his administration is to ensure that all displaced residents can return to their ancestral homes and resume their farming activities without the threat of abduction or violence.

The Governor’s optimistic assessment is backed by reports from the front lines, where a joint task force comprising the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and the Sokoto State Vigilante Corps has successfully intercepted several supply chains used by bandits to acquire fuel and food. Supporting context indicates that the administration has recently “upscaled” its logistics support for security operatives, providing over 100 brand-new patrol vehicles and advanced communication gadgets to improve response times in rural areas. Governor Ahmed Aliyu also highlighted the “intelligence-sharing” agreement between Sokoto and its neighbors Kebbi, Zamfara, and the Niger Republic which has effectively closed the “escape corridors” frequently used by criminals during military operations.

Stakeholder reactions to the Governor’s announcement have been largely positive, though tempered by a demand for “sustained presence.” Traditional rulers in the Eastern Senatorial District of the state, which has been the “epicenter” of the attacks, commended the Governor for his “hands-on leadership” and for personally visiting frontline communities to boost morale. However, community leaders have urged the Federal Government to increase the number of “permanent military outposts” in the state to prevent bandits from returning once the current “sweep” is completed. The “Sokoto Farmers Association” noted that while security has improved, many farmers still require “security escorts” to harvest their dry-season crops in remote border areas.

Security and defense analysts observe that Sokoto’s “recorded success” is a result of the “synergy between local knowledge and federal might.” Experts suggest that the Governor’s decision to formally integrate and fund the “Vigilante Corps” has provided the military with the “human intelligence” needed to navigate the complex terrains of the Sububu forest. Dr. Kabiru Adamu, a security management consultant, argued that the “trans-border cooperation” with the Niger Republic is the “missing link” that has finally been addressed. He warned, however, that the government must remain vigilant against “bandit informants” within the communities, who often sabotage operations by leaking “troop movements” to the criminal gangs in exchange for protection or money.

The broader implications of this success point toward a potential “economic rebound” for Sokoto State, which is a major contributor to Nigeria’s food security. By reclaiming the “bandit-held territories,” the Aliyu administration is creating a pathway for the restoration of “rural markets” and the return of international developmental partners who had previously withdrawn due to the security risks. The success in Sokoto could also serve as a “morale booster” for neighboring Zamfara and Katsina states, providing a template for “inter-state security cooperation.” As the 2026 farming season approaches, the focus remains on the “permanence of the peace” and the “reconstruction of schools and clinics” destroyed during the height of the crisis.
