Tragedy struck along the Makurdi–Otukpo highway in Benue State on Wednesday night, April 15, 2026, as suspected bandits intercepted a commercial vehicle and abducted 14 passengers, many of whom were students traveling to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations. The victims were reportedly traveling in a Benue Links bus toward Otukpo when the vehicle was stopped by hoodlums near the Otukpo axis around 8:00 PM. According to eyewitness accounts, the driver and one passenger managed to escape the scene and raised the alarm, but the majority of the occupants, primarily young men and women scheduled for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) the following morning, were led into the nearby forest.

The Commissioner of Police (CP) for the Benue State Command, Ifeanyi Emenari, confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating that he was personally on the ground in Otukpo coordinating a massive search and rescue operation involving various tactical teams and Divisional Police Officers. CP Emenari noted that while the rescue remains the top priority, the command is also investigating the circumstances of the trip, as the state-owned transport company, Benue Links, has a strict policy against night travel. It is alleged that the driver may have picked up the passengers after official working hours. The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, has also mobilized local vigilantes to assist the formal security agencies in the manhunt for the kidnappers.

Stakeholder reactions have been characterized by outrage and concern over the safety of candidates during the examination period. Parents and guardians of the missing students have converged on the Benue Links terminals and police headquarters, demanding immediate action to ensure the safe return of their children. The JAMB leadership has expressed deep sympathy for the affected candidates and is reportedly in talks with security agencies to assess the situation and determine the fate of the victims’ scheduled examinations. Education advocates have called on the Federal Government to provide special security details along major highways during national examination cycles to prevent students from becoming easy targets for criminal syndicates.

Expert security analysts observe that the Makurdi–Otukpo corridor has increasingly become a flashpoint for highway robbery and kidnapping due to the dense vegetation and several dilapidated sections of the road that force vehicles to slow down. Experts suggest that the abduction of students is a strategic attempt by bandits to exert maximum pressure on the government, knowing that cases involving “innocent candidates” attract significant national and international media attention. They argue that the security agencies must move beyond reactive patrols and establish permanent “check-and-rescue” points in identified black spots. Analysts maintain that the failure to secure these corridors during high-traffic periods like the UTME cycle could lead to a decline in educational participation in conflict-prone regions.

The broader implications of this abduction point toward a worsening security crisis that threatens the academic calendar and the socio-economic stability of North-Central Nigeria. The incident highlights the vulnerability of the nation’s transport infrastructure and the brazenness of non-state actors who operate with seemingly high levels of impunity. As the 2026 UTME continues across the country, the Benue abduction serves as a grim reminder of the “security tax” paid by Nigerian students in the pursuit of higher education. The focus remains on the police tactical teams currently in the bush, as the window for a safe rescue often narrows after the first 48 hours. For the families in Benue, the hope is for a swift resolution that sees their children returned unharmed.
