Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed four soldiers and one civilian in an attack on Mussa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident, which occurred around midday on Wednesday, has been confirmed by local authorities and security sources.
Chairman of Askira/Uba LGA, Mada Saidu, disclosed that the victims included a female civilian and four military personnel.
According to him, the attackers struck in the early afternoon, unleashing violence on the community and leading to casualties among both residents and security forces.
Military sources revealed that the fallen soldiers were members of the 115 Task Force Battalion, who were deployed to prevent the insurgents from gaining access to the town.
The sources explained that although the attackers were relatively few in number, the assault was well-coordinated and aimed at infiltrating the community. Troops reportedly engaged the insurgents and succeeded in repelling the attack, but not without losses.
Residents recounted that heavy gunfire lasted for about 30 minutes, forcing many villagers to flee their homes in panic.
One resident said the swift response of the military prevented what could have been a more devastating incident, as the attackers were believed to be attempting to overrun the community.
The latest attack underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of Borno State, where insurgent activities continue to pose threats to both civilian populations and security personnel.
Authorities have yet to provide further details on the aftermath of the attack or any casualties among the assailants.
