Farmers Flee Communities as Attacks Escalate in Benue

A humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding across several rural districts in Benue State as thousands of farmers are forced to abandon their ancestral lands following a violent escalation in attacks by suspected armed herders. The most recent tragedy struck the Agana and Mbatsada communities in the Gwer East Local Government Area on Saturday, April 4, 2026, where assailants reportedly stormed the villages in mid-afternoon, firing indiscriminately and burning granaries. Local authorities have confirmed that the death toll from the weekend assault has risen above nine, with dozens more sustaining life-threatening injuries. The systematic targeting of farming communities at the peak of the planting season has not only displaced vulnerable populations but also threatens to trigger a severe food security crisis in the Middle Belt region.

The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has expressed profound grief over the recurring violence, describing the latest incursion as a “calculated attempt” to destabilize the state’s agricultural economy. During a visit to the displaced persons’ camps in Aliade, the Governor assured the victims that the state government is collaborating with the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force to establish permanent security outposts in the most affected corridors. However, the former National Coordinator of the Middle Belt Patriots, Zayiri Yusuf, has criticized the central government’s response, arguing that the “lack of a definitive offensive” against the armed groups has emboldened the attackers to strike deeper into peaceful communities with impunity.

The displacement has created a massive influx of internally displaced persons into nearby towns such as Makurdi and Otukpo, stretching the capacity of existing social services to their breaking point. Many of the fleeing farmers, such as Sewuese Anyo who witnessed the attack in Gwer East, have reported that they are unable to return to their fields to harvest or plant due to the continued presence of armed men in the bushes. This “scorched earth” tactic has led to a total breakdown of the local economy in rural Benue, as markets have closed and supply chains have been severed. The Benue State Emergency Management Agency has called for urgent intervention from the Federal Government and international donor agencies to provide food, medicine, and temporary shelter for the thousands of newly displaced citizens.

Security and agricultural analysts observe that the escalation in Benue is part of a wider regional conflict over land and water resources, exacerbated by climate change and the proliferation of small arms. Experts argue that the state’s “Anti-Open Grazing Law” continues to be a point of friction, as enforcement remains inconsistent and often triggers retaliatory violence. They suggest that until a comprehensive national policy on ranching and community policing is fully implemented, the rural communities in the Middle Belt will remain “killing fields.” Analysts maintain that the loss of a single planting season in Benue has national implications, as the state provides a significant percentage of the country’s yam, cassava, and grain supplies.

The broader implications of the Benue attacks point toward a deepening fracture in Nigeria’s internal security architecture. The inability of the state to protect its agrarian heartland suggests a need for a fundamental shift toward “intelligence-led rural policing” rather than the current model of reactive military intervention. As the 2026 rainy season progresses, the window for agricultural recovery is closing for thousands of families. The focus remains on whether the Tinubu administration will deploy the “Special Intervention Forces” promised for the Middle Belt to clear the occupied farmlands. For the farmers of Benue, the primary demand is not just for aid, but for the safety and dignity to return to the lands that have sustained their families for generations.
