The Olubadan of Ibadanland and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, have dismissed allegations made by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, regarding an alleged plot to remove the monarch.
Fayose had earlier claimed that Makinde was making moves to depose the Olubadan, suggesting that the process would begin with official queries over the monarch’s absence at a recent coronation ceremony. The allegation sparked reactions across political and traditional circles in the state.
Responding to the claims, the Olubadan described the allegation as baseless and unfounded, insisting that there was no crisis between the palace and the state government. Sources close to the monarch noted that the traditional institution remains stable and is not under any form of threat.
Governor Makinde also refuted the allegation, stating that his administration has the utmost respect for traditional institutions in Oyo State. He emphasized that his government would never interfere in the established process of traditional leadership or take actions capable of destabilising the revered Ibadan traditional system.
The governor further clarified that there was no plan, direct or indirect, to remove the Olubadan, describing Fayose’s comments as misleading and unnecessary. He urged the public to disregard the claims and avoid spreading unverified information that could create tension.
Political observers believe the exchange reflects ongoing rivalries and tensions among key political figures, rather than any real threat to the Ibadan traditional leadership structure. They also stressed the importance of verifying information before making public statements on sensitive issues involving traditional authorities.
Despite the controversy, normal activities in Ibadan have continued without disruption, with residents expressing confidence in the stability of both the state government and the traditional institution.
The development highlights the delicate relationship between politics and traditional leadership, as well as the need for caution in public discourse to prevent unnecessary unrest.
