The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the detention of some of its personnel following a clash with soldiers in Bayelsa State during the visit of President Bola Tinubu on Friday.
The confrontation, which quickly went viral online, was captured in a 53-second video showing uniformed security operatives engaged in a heated exchange. In the footage, a driver of a Hilux vehicle marked “Naval Police” is seen stepping out to confront another driver, sparking a tense verbal dispute.
Moments later, the situation escalated when a soldier, reportedly armed with a rifle, approached and struck the Naval Police driver. This action triggered a physical altercation, drawing in personnel from both sides. The incident soon developed into a chaotic brawl, with officers exchanging blows as stunned onlookers watched.
The clash is believed to have occurred as the President was leaving the venue of an official engagement in the state. However, the exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear as of the time of reporting.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of Naval Information, Abi Folorunso, confirmed via his X account on Saturday that those involved have been taken into custody. He stated that the personnel are currently undergoing administrative and disciplinary procedures in line with existing military regulations.
According to Folorunso, the Navy has commenced internal processes to address the situation and ensure accountability among the officers involved. The development underscores ongoing efforts by military authorities to maintain discipline and professionalism within the ranks, particularly during high-profile national events.
