The Nigeria Immigration Service has launched an investigation following allegations of widespread extortion by its personnel along the Lagos-Seme border corridor.

The development comes after online reports accused officers stationed at the busy international route of engaging in unethical practices. In response, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, ordered the immediate suspension of the comptrollers in charge of the affected commands to allow for a transparent and unbiased probe.

In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the immigration boss strongly condemned the alleged misconduct, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to the core values and operational standards of the agency. She stressed that such actions undermine public trust and damage the integrity of the Service.

The NIS leadership has directed a comprehensive investigation to identify all officers involved in the alleged extortion. It assured that strict disciplinary measures would be taken against any personnel found culpable, in line with established regulations.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the Service emphasized its dedication to delivering efficient and lawful services at all entry and exit points across the country. It maintained that any act capable of tarnishing its reputation or eroding public confidence would not be tolerated.

The agency also called on members of the public to support its accountability drive by reporting cases of misconduct through its 24-hour contact centre and official social media platforms. According to the statement, internal monitoring mechanisms are being strengthened to ensure discipline and transparency among personnel.

The Service noted that the move is part of broader efforts to promote ethical conduct while facilitating lawful migration and border management operations nationwide
