The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) has said Ibadan has the potential to emerge as a major economic hub in Nigeria if its resources and opportunities are fully harnessed.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 Ibadan Cultural Festival, the President-General of CCII, Ajeniyi Ajewole, noted that the city’s growth could significantly boost employment and increase internally generated revenue for Oyo State. He explained that beyond celebrating culture, the festival serves as a platform to promote unity and economic development.

Ajewole highlighted that the annual event is designed to attract tourists, stimulate business activities, and reconnect indigenes in the diaspora with their roots. According to him, activities such as trade, arts, crafts, and tourism-related ventures would benefit from the festival, contributing to the local economy.

As part of the celebration, four notable Nigerians have been shortlisted for honours, including George Akume, Ishaq Oloyede, Abdulfatai Buhari, and Adesola Ajayi. Ajewole said the individuals were selected based on their contributions to national development and their impact on Ibadan.

He added that the festival lineup includes a variety of events such as medical outreach, youth programmes, cultural displays, and entertainment activities, all aimed at showcasing the city’s rich heritage.

The grand finale is scheduled to hold at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, with expectations of large participation and increased corporate involvement.

Organisers believe the festival will not only preserve Ibadan’s cultural identity but also position the city as a destination for tourism and investment, reinforcing its potential as a future economic powerhouse in Nigeria.
