Security forces successfully thwarted a major attack by suspected bandits on communities in Niger State, following a coordinated operation involving troops of the Nigerian Army, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and local volunteer groups.

The operation took place in Bagna and Erena communities within Shiroro Local Government Area, where intelligence reports had indicated an impending large-scale assault. Acting on the information, security personnel and vigilantes mobilised swiftly, setting up an ambush to intercept the attackers before they could strike.

According to security sources, more than 300 armed bandits, riding on motorcycles and carrying sophisticated weapons, had planned to invade the communities. However, their movement was detected in advance, allowing the joint forces to launch a surprise counter-operation.

The ambush reportedly resulted in heavy casualties among the attackers, with several of them killed during the encounter. Others fled the scene under pressure, retreating toward nearby areas, including the Makuba and Allawa axis.

Local residents expressed relief and gratitude following the successful operation, noting that the intervention prevented what could have been a devastating attack. Many described the response as timely and decisive, crediting the joint effort for saving lives and protecting property.

Community members also highlighted the growing cooperation between formal security agencies and grassroots volunteer groups. According to them, this partnership has significantly improved intelligence gathering and response time, helping to close longstanding security gaps in vulnerable rural areas.

The development underscores the importance of collaboration in tackling insecurity, particularly in regions frequently targeted by armed groups. Observers say that the integration of local knowledge with professional security operations has strengthened early warning systems and enhanced overall effectiveness.

While the threat of banditry remains a challenge in parts of Niger State and beyond, the successful foiling of the attack has boosted confidence among residents. Many are hopeful that sustained joint operations will continue to deter criminal elements and restore lasting peace across affected communities.
