Russia and China on Tuesday vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution seeking to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, dealing a significant setback to international efforts aimed at securing one of the world’s most vital oil shipping routes.

The draft resolution, introduced by Bahrain and backed by the United States, had already been revised to tone down earlier proposals that would have authorized the use of force by Gulf states to protect vessels navigating the waterway. Despite these adjustments, the measure failed to pass after both Russia and China exercised their veto powers.

Voting results showed that 11 members of the Security Council supported the resolution, while two countries—Russia and China—voted against it. Two other members abstained, reflecting divisions within the Council over how best to address rising tensions in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, serves as a critical corridor for global energy supplies, with a significant percentage of the world’s oil shipments passing through it daily. Any disruption to its operations carries far-reaching implications for international trade and energy markets.

Speaking after the vote, Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, expressed disappointment over the outcome, stating that Gulf nations regret the Council’s failure to adopt the resolution.

He noted that the proposal was aimed at ensuring safe and uninterrupted navigation through the waterway, particularly amid growing security concerns in the region.

The veto by Moscow and Beijing underscores ongoing geopolitical tensions and differing approaches among major powers regarding security interventions and the use of force in international waters.

While supporters of the resolution argued that urgent action was necessary to safeguard global shipping and maintain stability, opponents raised concerns about escalation and the potential consequences of military involvement.

The failure to pass the resolution leaves uncertainty over the next steps the international community may take to address security challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global commerce.
