‘Atiku’s Presidential Bid Unrealisable, Against Zoning’

The political landscape surrounding the 2027 general elections has been jolted by a fresh wave of criticism directed at the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, over his purported intention to contest the presidency again. Political stakeholders and pan-regional groups have described the bid as “unrealisable” and a direct violation of the informal “zoning” agreement between the North and the South. The critics argue that after the eight-year tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari (a Northerner), and the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (a Southerner), equity and federal character dictate that the power remains in the South for two terms to ensure national balance.

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rafiu Aregbesola, and other prominent voices within the opposition have pointed out that the North-South rotation is a fundamental, albeit unwritten, pillar of Nigeria’s democratic stability. They maintain that Atiku Abubakar, having contested the presidency multiple times since 1993, should embrace the role of a “statesman” and mentor younger leaders rather than seeking the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) or any other coalition. The argument posits that another Northern candidacy in 2027 would trigger a sense of marginalization in the South, potentially leading to political instability and a heated ethnic discourse that the country can ill-afford.

In defense of the former Vice President, his media office has countered that “zoning” is not a constitutional requirement but a convenient political arrangement used by parties when it suits them. They argue that the focus should be on “capacity and competence” rather than geography. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar himself has recently stated that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) grants every eligible citizen the right to seek the highest office in the land. Supporters suggest that the current economic climate requires an experienced hand who understands the intricacies of the global economy and internal security, regardless of his region of origin.

Political analysts observe that Atiku’s persistent ambition is creating a “generational bottleneck” within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), preventing the emergence of fresh faces. The pushback from the South is not merely about geography but about a desire for a “paradigm shift” in leadership. Experts suggest that if Atiku insists on running, it may lead to another major fracture within the opposition, similar to the “G-5 Governors” crisis that significantly weakened the party in the 2023 polls. The broader implications of this debate suggest that the 2027 race will be defined more by the struggle for internal party democracy and regional equity than by traditional party loyalty.
