The Nigerian Army, operating under the Joint Task Force (JTF) Northwest Operation Fansan Yamma, has recorded a significant tactical victory following a high-intensity encounter that resulted in the elimination of over 30 armed bandits in Zamfara State. The coordinated counter-offensive, which took place over the weekend, specifically targeted terror enclaves in the Tsafe Local Government Area (LGA), a region that has long grappled with the menace of cattle rustling and violent kidnapping. Military sources confirmed that the operation was triggered by an initial attack on members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Kunchin Kalgo village, prompting an immediate and overwhelming response from regular troops who deployed superior firepower to subdue the assailants.
Among those confirmed killed during the fierce gun battle was Kachalla Iliya Sarki, identified as the son of the notorious bandit kingpin Ado Aliero, along with another prominent terror commander known as Dogo Bete. The spokesperson for Operation Fansan Yamma, Captain David Adewusi, noted that the neutralisation of these high-value targets represents a major blow to the command-and-control structure of the bandit groups operating within the Munhaye forest. While the exact body count is still being verified through ongoing clearance operations, ground reports indicate that the insurgents suffered heavy casualties as they attempted to retreat into the dense vegetation bordering Kaduna and Katsina states.
The success of the mission, however, came at a cost, as over 10 members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) reportedly lost their lives during the initial ambush and subsequent exchange. Despite these losses, the synergy between the formal military and local vigilante groups has been described as pivotal in regaining territorial control over several agrarian communities. In a related development, troops successfully repelled another group of bandits in Kungurki village within the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area (LGA), further demonstrating the increased operational tempo mandated by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.
Security analysts have pointed out that the elimination of Ado Aliero’s son could trigger retaliatory attacks or, conversely, lead to the fragmentation of his criminal syndicate. The use of intelligence-led kinetic operations is seen as a necessary shift from defensive posturing to active pursuit. Experts suggest that to sustain these gains, the Federal Government must complement military action with robust border security and community engagement programs to prevent the recruitment of local youth by fleeing terror cells. The broader implications of this victory are felt across the Northwest geopolitical zone, where residents are beginning to express cautious optimism regarding the possibility of returning to their farmlands ahead of the upcoming planting season.
