Former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has dismissed reports suggesting he plans to contest the Benue North-West Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The clarification follows widespread speculation on social media, particularly across Benue State, claiming that the former governor was preparing for another senatorial bid.
Ortom, who governed the state from 2015 to 2023, previously contested the Benue North-West senatorial seat in 2023 but lost to Senator Titus Zam, a former aide.
Reacting to the reports, his media aide, Terver Akase, described the claims as false and misleading in a statement issued on Saturday.
According to the statement, Ortom has no intention of seeking any elective office in 2027, noting that he has consistently made this position clear in previous public engagements.
“Ortom has no intention whatsoever to contest any elective office in 2027. He has said this clearly, publicly, and repeatedly,” the statement said.
It added that the former governor remains focused on contributing to the political space through advisory and party-building roles rather than pursuing electoral positions.
The statement further emphasised that Ortom is committed to strengthening democratic values, supporting his political party, and offering guidance as a statesman.
Ortom also acknowledged receiving numerous calls and messages from supporters and associates expressing concern over the circulating reports, reiterating that the claims of his candidacy are unfounded.
Political observers note that the speculation persisted despite Ortom’s repeated stance against returning to elective politics.
