The African Democratic Congress has declared its intention to proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention despite reservations expressed by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The Independent National Electoral Commission commonly abbreviated as INEC is responsible for regulating political parties and overseeing electoral processes in Nigeria.

Party officials stated that preparations for the congresses, which are expected to produce new leadership structures at various levels, are already at an advanced stage. They maintained that internal party processes remain within the party’s constitutional rights, provided they comply with relevant laws.

INEC had reportedly raised concerns regarding procedural compliance, including notification timelines and adherence to guidelines governing party activities. Such concerns often arise when parties fail to meet statutory requirements or when disputes exist within party structures.

Observers note that tensions between political parties and INEC are not uncommon, particularly during periods of internal reorganisation. Congresses and conventions are critical events that determine party leadership, influence candidate selection and shape political strategy ahead of elections.

Stakeholders have urged the ADC to ensure full compliance with electoral regulations to avoid sanctions or legal disputes that could undermine its activities. They also called on INEC to provide clear guidance and maintain neutrality in its oversight role.

The development comes at a time when political parties are repositioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, making internal cohesion and legitimacy crucial.

Analysts believe that how the ADC navigates this situation will impact its credibility and ability to compete effectively in future elections.
