Thirteen nations ranked among the top 50 in the latest FIFA world rankings will not be participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to the final rankings released ahead of the tournament beginning this summer in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite the expanded 48‑team format designed to include more nations, several prominent footballing countries will be absent from the competition that kicks off on June 11. The latest FIFA rankings place France at the top, followed by Spain and defending champions Argentina, while England, Portugal, and Brazil complete the top six.
The most notable omission is Italy, ranked 12th in the world, making them the only top‑15 side not to qualify. The four‑time world champions suffered a dramatic play‑off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, missing a World Cup for the third consecutive edition. This marks a staggering downturn for a nation once synonymous with global football success.
Nigeria, currently ranked 26th, stands out as the highest‑placed African nation that will not feature in the finals. The Super Eagles failed to secure qualification through the CAF pathway, with their absence confirmed among the list of African teams heading to North America.
Other high‑ranking teams missing out include Denmark (20th), Ukraine (32nd), Poland (35th), Russia (36th), Wales (37th), Serbia (39th), Hungary (42nd), Cameroon (45th), Greece (47th), Slovakia (48th), and Venezuela (49th).
The final tournament draw has placed the 48 qualified teams into 12 groups of four. Reigning world champions France will open their campaign against Senegal on June 16 at the MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, while Argentina face Algeria in Kansas City on June 17. England begins its Group L match with Croatia the same day in Dallas.
The next FIFA rankings update is scheduled for June 9, just days before the World Cup opener.
