U.S. President Donald J. Trump has officially re-designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged killings of Christians and widespread violations of religious freedom.
Trump made the announcement via his Truth Social platform, describing the situation as an “existential threat to Christianity.” He accused radical Islamist groups of “mass slaughter” and vowed that the U.S. “will not stay silent.”
The CPC designation, issued under the International Religious Freedom Act, empowers Washington to impose diplomatic or economic restrictions on nations accused of tolerating religious persecution.
Nigeria’s government rejected the move, saying violence in the country affects both Christians and Muslims, not a single faith. Officials described Trump’s comments as “misleading” and politically driven.
Nigeria was first listed as a CPC in 2020 during Trump’s previous tenure but was later delisted by President Joe Biden in 2021.
