Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has stepped down from his position in the cabinet of Bola Tinubu to pursue his ambition of contesting the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to available information, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon, signaling his intention to enter the gubernatorial race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His decision follows a presidential directive issued earlier in March, mandating all political appointees with aspirations for elective office to resign before the end of the month. The directive was communicated through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The policy applies broadly to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal aides, and heads of federal agencies. It aligns with provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, aimed at preventing conflicts of interest and ensuring a level playing field ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Tuggar’s resignation marks a significant political development, as preparations gradually intensify for the next election cycle. His anticipated entry into the Bauchi governorship race is expected to reshape the political landscape in the state, particularly within the APC, where internal alignments and strategies are likely to evolve in the coming months.
