Samson Adamu has been appointed as the acting Secretary-General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), making history as the first Nigerian to occupy the position since the organisation was established over 70 years ago. His appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigerian football administration and highlights the growing recognition of Nigeria’s contributions to the continent’s football development.

A statement issued on Sunday by Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, confirmed that Adamu succeeds Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mosengo-Omba stepped down from his role to contest the presidential election of his country’s football federation, FECOFA, creating the vacancy that Adamu now fills.

Before assuming the role of acting Secretary-General, Adamu held the position of CAF Director of Tournaments and Events. In that capacity, he played a pivotal role in coordinating and executing some of the continent’s most prestigious football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF Champions League tournaments. His experience in organising large-scale continental events and his in-depth knowledge of CAF’s operational frameworks were cited as key factors in his nomination.

Olajire further explained that Adamu’s nomination was put forward by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the CAF Congress during its meeting on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt. The ratification underscores the confidence that CAF’s governing bodies have in Adamu’s capacity to steer the organisation, especially at a time when African football continues to grow in both visibility and professionalism.

Football stakeholders across Nigeria have welcomed the development, noting that Adamu’s appointment not only elevates Nigeria’s influence within CAF but also provides a platform for the country to contribute strategically to the development and management of African football. Analysts believe that with Adamu at the helm, CAF could benefit from enhanced administrative efficiency, more robust tournament planning, and improved collaboration between African football federations.

With this appointment, Samson Adamu becomes a trailblazer for Nigerian administrators in continental football governance, reflecting both personal achievement and the broader potential of Nigeria’s football leadership on the African stage.
