Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, citing the need for political realignment. Kwankwaso, who was the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, made the announcement in a statement issued on Sunday.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said, describing the decision as difficult given his longstanding involvement with the party.
Kwankwaso explained that his exit was motivated by the current political trajectory of the nation, which he said calls for strategic realignment. “I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he added.
He expressed gratitude to the party leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and leaders at all levels for their support during his tenure. Kwankwaso also thanked members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and party supporters for their commitment, pledging to continue collaborating for the nation’s development.
Although Kwankwaso did not officially disclose the political platform he intends to join, reports indicate that he is expected to formally join the African Democratic Congress on Monday. Credible sources within both ADC and NNPP revealed that he would be welcomed by the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, and Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.
It is also reported that Kwankwaso may join the ADC alongside former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.
Recently, former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and ADC stalwart, Atiku Abubakar, hosted Kwankwaso in Abuja. According to Atiku, the visit was a courtesy call, during which they discussed the current state of the country.
