The remains of the mother of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, have arrived in Abuja ahead of her burial.
The deceased, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, passed away on Friday, March 27, in Cairo, Egypt, following a brief illness. Her death was confirmed by her grandson, Mohammed El-Rufai, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
In a statement shared on X, Mohammed El-Rufai announced that her remains arrived safely in Abuja on Sunday morning. He also disclosed details of the funeral arrangements, stating that the Janazah prayer would be held at 1 p.m.
According to him, the funeral prayer is scheduled to take place at the National Mosque, after which she will be laid to rest at the Gudu Cemetery. He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon her soul and others who have passed before her.
Hajiya El-Rufai’s death comes amid legal challenges involving her son, Nasir El-Rufai. The former governor was recently in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations bordering on corruption and money laundering.
He was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24 on a 10-count charge. The case has been adjourned to March 31, 2026, for the hearing of pending applications, including his bail request. However, he was granted temporary release from ICPC custody to attend his mother’s burial and be with his family.
Meanwhile, several prominent Nigerians have extended their condolences to the El-Rufai family. Among them are President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who all paid tribute to the late matriarch.
