The Delta State Police Command has dismissed a viral social media report alleging that a suspect died in custody at Ekpan Police Station, describing the claim as false, misleading, and intended to discredit its operations.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said the allegation circulated by a self-acclaimed activist, Israel Joe was entirely unfounded. He noted that the report attempted to undermine ongoing efforts by the Command to combat crime across the state.
The viral post had claimed that an “innocent sick person” arrested during a police operation died while in detention at the Ekpan Police Station. It also accused officers of misconduct and called for protests, including demands for the redeployment of the officer in charge of operations.
Refuting the claim, the police spokesperson stated categorically that no suspect died in custody at Ekpan or anywhere else in Delta State. He emphasized that there were no casualties recorded during or after the operation in question, urging members of the public to disregard the report.
According to the Command, the incident referenced in the viral post was linked to a coordinated raid carried out on March 25 and 26, 2026. The operation targeted known criminal hideouts and was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, Olumuyiwa Adejobi. Authorities described the exercise as part of a broader strategy to curb criminal activities and enhance public safety in the region.
The police further reiterated their commitment to professionalism and accountability, stressing that all operations are conducted in line with established legal standards and respect for human rights. They warned against the spread of unverified information, noting that such claims could incite unnecessary panic and erode public trust in security agencies.
Residents were encouraged to rely on official communication channels for accurate information and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order. The Command assured the public that it remains dedicated to safeguarding lives and property while addressing security challenges effectively.
