Fresh political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections have been triggered following a recent meeting between Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, reigniting discussions about a possible opposition alliance to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, paid a Sallah visit to Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, in Kano State. According to Yunusa Tanko, the meeting focused on “strategising for collective interest to make Nigeria work again,” fueling speculation that both camps may be revisiting previously failed alliance talks.

The development has revived memories of the 2023 elections, where both politicians contested separately despite earlier negotiations that ultimately collapsed. Analysts believe that disagreements over power-sharing arrangements, party supremacy, and the presidential ticket prevented what could have been a formidable third-force coalition. Their separate candidacies were widely seen as splitting opposition votes, contributing to Tinubu’s eventual victory under the All Progressives Congress.
