Former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, has raised alarm over the worsening security situation in Nigeria’s North-East, warning that the country risks losing territorial control of Borno State and the wider region to insurgent groups.
Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, made the statement on Tuesday while calling on the Federal Government to urgently strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigerian Army. He emphasized the need for improved weaponry, ammunition, and logistical support to effectively combat insurgency and banditry.
His warning follows a series of recent coordinated attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters in parts of Borno State. In particular, the Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area came under heavy assault, resulting in the deaths of soldiers, the village head, and several community elders, including a woman.
Ndume visited the affected communities of Ngoshe and Pulka alongside Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, where both officials assessed the scale of destruction. He described the devastation as total, noting that entire communities had been reduced to rubble, with only a small mosque left standing in Ngoshe.
According to the senator, initial reports suggest that troops were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the insurgents, forcing a temporary retreat. He stated that it was only after reinforcements arrived days later that the military was able to regain control of the affected areas.
Ndume stressed that the situation underscores the urgent need for the Federal Government to intensify support for the armed forces. He also revealed plans to engage his colleagues at the National Assembly to push for legislative action aimed at addressing the crisis.
Despite the destruction, he commended the resilience of the affected communities, noting that many residents remain determined to rebuild and return to their homes. He also praised Governor Zulum for his hands-on leadership, particularly for spending a night in Pulka, describing the gesture as a morale booster for residents and troops alike.
The lawmaker concluded by urging swift federal intervention to rebuild devastated communities and restore lasting security in the region.
