Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have allegedly planted explosives along the Wawa-Lumma road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, resulting in the destruction of a major bridge and damage to multiple vehicles, authorities and security analysts report. The incident has caused significant disruption to traffic and local movement, raising fresh concerns about road safety in the region.
The attack was first highlighted in a post shared on X by security analyst Bakatsine on Monday. He cautioned that the recent event underscores the increasing risks posed to commuters and transporters using roads in this part of the state. According to his report, the explosion severely compromised the structural integrity of the bridge, rendering it unusable and effectively halting travel along this busy route.
“Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have planted explosives along the Wawa-Lumma route in Borgu LGA of Niger State, destroying a key bridge, damaging four vehicles, and disrupting movement in the area,” Bakatsine wrote. “While four vehicles were reportedly affected by the blast, no casualties have yet been confirmed.”
Residents and travelers in the area described scenes of chaos following the explosion, noting that the blast left the road impassable and forced several motorists to turn back or seek alternative routes. The local authorities are yet to release an official statement, but security personnel have reportedly increased patrols along the surrounding highways to prevent further incidents and to secure the affected area.
This incident adds to a growing list of attacks targeting road infrastructure and civilians in the region, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by Boko Haram activities in Niger State and neighbouring areas. Security experts warn that without intensified surveillance and preventive measures, road users remain highly vulnerable to similar attacks.
Local communities have expressed concerns over the persistent threats and called on government and security agencies to take urgent action to restore safety along critical transport routes. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to assess the full extent of the damage and work towards reopening the bridge to restore normal movement along the Wawa-Lumma road.
