Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation Hadin Kai have uncovered a suspected terrorist burial site, along with weapons and a medical facility, during a clearance operation in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State.

The discovery was disclosed on X by counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama. According to Makama, the findings were made on March 21 by soldiers of the 68 Battalion during an exploitation patrol in the Duguri area, citing information from security sources.

The patrol, led by the unit’s Commanding Officer, was part of ongoing operations to track fleeing insurgents and restrict their movements within the axis. During the mission, troops reportedly recovered a fabricated mortar tube and identified a burial ground believed to contain the remains of approximately eight suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province.

In addition, the troops located an advanced aid post thought to have been used for treating injured fighters. Military sources said the findings indicate heavy losses suffered by insurgents in recent confrontations with troops, forcing them to retreat from positions in the area.

Following the discovery, the Nigerian Army has intensified patrols and clearance operations across the axis to prevent insurgents from regrouping and to sustain pressure on fleeing elements.

The operation underscores the ongoing commitment of the military to combat terrorism in Borno State and secure communities affected by insurgent activities. Military authorities have reaffirmed their resolve to dismantle terrorist networks and maintain security in the region.

The troops’ discovery is also being used to gather further intelligence on insurgent activities, including weapon caches, hideouts, and potential collaborators in the area, as part of a broader strategy to weaken ISWAP operations in northeastern Nigeria.
