The Lagos State Government has revealed that over six million residents are currently living with hypertension, describing the situation as a major public health concern. The disclosure was made during a health awareness campaign organised by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with non government organisations.
Officials say the high prevalence is linked to urban stress, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and limited access to routine medical check ups. Many residents are reportedly unaware of their condition, increasing the risk of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.
In response, the state government has announced plans to expand community screening programmes, strengthen primary healthcare centres, and promote healthier lifestyles through public education. Health experts are urging residents to monitor their blood pressure regularly and adopt preventive habits such as reduced salt intake and regular exercise. They warn that without urgent intervention, hypertension could place an even heavier burden on Lagos’ healthcare system in the coming years.
